About: This Dutch edition is the authorised translation by Dr. B.F. van Ondiep of the American edition of “Modern Man in the Making”. Beautifully designed with many colourful ‘isotypes’; the picture language developed by Neurath and artist Gerd Arntz to display statistics in a simplified manner. Arntz would later join the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics. Otto Neurath (Vienna, December 10, 1882 - Oxford, December 22, 1945) developed a scientific method that made data information more attractive and easier to understand: ISOTYPE (International System Of TYpographic Picture Education). Numbers and words in statistics are clarified in this method by means of pictures: 10,000 cars are indicated in the statistics by 1 symbol for a car, and 50,000 cars by 5 times the same symbol. Neurath needed someone who could translate his words into clear, simple images. For this he found the German, socially engaged artist Gerd Arntz (1900-1988). He designed more than 4000 symbols for statistics and, together with Otto Neurath, optimised the ISOTYPE method for image statistics. They are all recognisable, powerful and often timeless symbols that are still used today. Icons for, for example, road signs and airports.
Good condition: ware consistent with age, rubbing to covers, age toning on pages, binding tight, clean interior with exception of light pencil inscriptions on some of the diagrammatic pages.
