(Preface) Motorists hurtling along motorways at 100 m.p.h., or pedestrians struggling with subways in the rush hour, travellers at airport or rail terminals, all need directional guidance. This is one of the main functions of the modern sign, which may be in words, illustrations or symbols, or a combination of all these. Another, quite different, form of sign is the shopfront facia board. Here very different factors are at play, factors of establishing the nature of a business, the reticence of the sign or the brashness all contributing to an individual image. his book sets out to show such signs in current use. The photographs have been chosen to point out possibilities in design and technique with, for comparison, a number of old signs which might have some bearing on signs today.
