(Preface) 'The original design of the Atelier exhibitions, work to show mainly recent work by younger artists, has also been followed this time. The exhibitors do not have a common starting point. Three of them use clay as a material, two others use glass and then there is also textiles. The ideas behind the different works are completely different and therefore the results have no visual similarities.

Artists who use material in a way other than what is expected of them are often suspicious and experience a kind of pedantic criticism. With a painter people don't say (or think): first see that you can paint 'real', while many artists use materials with which you can also make tableware, vases or socks, we experience that kind of approach. Criticism of the work itself and a discussion of one's own personal vision are often complicated by the fact that two stages of appreciation have to be passed through, first comes the functionality, then the aesthetic or idea quality.

A number of exhibitions are scheduled for this and the coming year at the Stedelijk Museum, where this theme will be discussed. Very evident in the collection of Ceramics of the West Coast (October-November 1979), which shows an unorthodox conception of ceramics that took a long time to become presentable and discussable (in the official museums). In the exhibitions of Emmy van Leersum (November 22, 1979) and Ria van Elk (October 19, 1980), the problem of the blurring of boundaries will also be discussed.

The artists of Atelier 16 have found their own forms to express their ideas and these are in the first place up for discussion, rather than all those other important factors such as education, environment, technique, character, etc.' Liesbeth Crommelin
