(Introduction) 'This booklet is concerned with points of typography that can be described as 'micro-typography' or 'detail-typography'.
While 'macro-typography'-typography as a whole, known also as 'layout' or 'graphic design' - is concerned with format, the size and placing of type areas and illustrations, and the design of headings and captions, 'micro-typography' deals with the following: letters themselves and the relationship between letter-spacing and words, word-spacing and lines, and interlinear spacing and type columns. These are subjects often ignored by typographers and graphic designers, as being outside their brief as 'creative' designers. The disappearance of metal types and the introduction of non-metal composition systems has raised questions which have become important insomuch as they now affect users of type rather than those who supply it. Metal type, obeying fixed rules, has been replaced by a new and as yet undefined technology. Since type users, whether printers or typesetters, have managed the change-over without too many difficulties, but have not solved the accompanying design problems, the themes discussed in this booklet may be of interest even to technological experts. The need for guide-lines in designing for the new technology has not yet been satisfied.
When we talk about 'design' we are not, in the first place, talking about 'aesthetics' in the sense of subjective aesthetic freedom or personal taste; we mean rather the visual elements that affect the optimum reception of the text. Since that is the aim of all typography concerned with a body of text, it follows that 'design' means con- cern with legibility. Design therefore in 'micro-typography' goes far beyond personal preference. The decisive factor is the physiology of the human eye.'
