About: Otl Aicher is a graphic designer with extensive experience in typography. Born in Ulm in 1922, he studied sculpture at Munich Academy of Fine Arts after the Second World War. In 1948, he opened his own advertising design office in Ulm, which was primarily involved with Corporate Identity.

"The advent of computerised typesetting in the printing industry opened up new perspectives to the typesetter. He can significantly influence typeface and layout, something hot-metal setting did not allow. It is apparent, however, that the new technology can only emulate the quality of craft printing if its operators understand what constitutes proper type and how to work with it. Druckhaus Maack therefore commissioned Otl Aicher to compile a record of his typographic experience so as to prepare graphic designers, setters and typographers for a new typographic software system designed to give them better guidance in the use and application of type. Using a new family of typefaces, it would be ventured that there is still room for improvement in the legibility of type."
