The most inspiring, trend-setting and enduring stories, events and works have been collected here to guide the reader to the highlights: 52 for 52 weeks, written by more than 40 experts. Releases such as the legendary 1975 NASA Graphic Standards Manual are presented and various creative approaches discussed. New fonts, typeface designers and foundries are introduced, classic American fonts newly interpreted and the question of why new fonts are always needed examined. Important new logos are presented, the big industry events such as the Typo in Berlin reported on and the winners of the European Design Awards presented. At the end of the book there are dedications to Adrian Frutiger and Alan Rickman, who was once a graphic designer.'

Condition: Very Good. Today, graphic designers use type in partnership with graphic elements in ways that turbo charge meaning and impact. Type plus image – or images – can greatly enhance typographic expression. And letterforms themselves, when redrawn, combined, distorted, or augmented with decorative embellishments, can enhance meaning and lend emotive qualities to all kinds of typographic communication. By focusing on a host of contemporary practitioners from around the world, Type Plus creates a picture of a new dynamism in typographic expression. The era of type as a passive, semi-invisible holder of meaning is long gone. Design, Ecology, Politics describes how ecological literacy challenges many central assumptions in design theory and practice.

By bringing design, ecology and socio-political theory together, Boehnert describes how power is constructed, reproduced and obfuscated by design in ways which often cause environmental harms. The transformative potential of design is dependent on deep-reaching analysis of the problems design attempts to address. As creatives enter into a new phase of minimalism, taking contemporary design in fresh and exciting directions, they also wave goodbye to the ornate, decorative patterns that have saturated our visual culture for the past decade. This book showcases around 150 outstanding minimalist designers working across a wide range of formats and media – from independent magazines and album covers to corporate identity and branding. It is separated into three sections that identify key approaches to minimalism in its visual forms: ‘Reduction’, ‘Geometry’ and ‘Print Production’. Only the finest international examples created in the last two to three years have been included, ensuring that Min is at the forefront of contemporary design. Interspersed throughout are exclusive interviews with leading practitioners and proponents of minimalist design, including Jessica Svendsen, Made Thought and Eric Hu, allowing you to gain in-depth insight into their creative processes. Essays on the evolution of minimalism in graphic design provide historical context and offer a comparison between the first wave of minimalism in the 1960s and its current renaissance.'

Condition: Very Good. Born in 1972, Frédéric Teschner graduated from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris in 1997 and trained with such figures as Pierre Bernard – for whom he worked at the Atelier de création graphique – and Pierre di Sciullo. From opening his own studio in 2002 to his sudden passing in 2016, he consistently blended various influences in his work, thus establishing a strongly personal graphic signature. He left a mark on a whole generation of graphic designers. He always showed a keen interest in work relationships, which he liked to develop with his various partners in the context of commissioned works. He undertook both commissioned works and personal projects and was constantly switching from one to the other.

The book shows a selection of different projects and objects which were designed by Frédéric Teschner during his career. His work is presented through original photographs taken by Morgane Le Gall. In order to understand his work and his approach, personalities who collaborated or assisted Teschner during his career were commissioned to write thirteen texts. To highlight his concern for printing techniques, a 1-scale-printed sample, using blue-back poster paper, is inserted at the end of each book, making every copy unique.'

Condition: Very Good. Best known for her powerful portraits, she also posed her sitters - friends, family and servants - as characters from biblical, historical or allegorical stories. Her photographs were rule breaking: intentionally out-of-focus, and often included scratches, smudges and other traces of her process. In her lifetime, Cameron was criticised for her unconventional techniques, but also widely celebrated for the beauty of her compositions and her conviction that photography was an art form. This book draws upon the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection of Cameron's photographs and correspondence to shed light on previously unacknowledged aspects of her experimental approach.'

Condition: Very Good. This is a mutual portrait, an exchange in which the artist's and model's individualities blur, leaving traces on each other.'

Condition: Very Good. Vitturi’s process is largely concerned with the creation, consumption and preservation of images. The makeshift sculptures he created mimic the organic and temporary nature of the market, and their documentation is the way in which they endure after diminishing. He has collected each ring here. Several pieces of jewellery belong to the significant women in his life: his girlfriend, his mother. The cock rings have been bought for this piece. Jonathan talks about ‘The Human Condition’ with a sense of yin and yang – as a journey along some kind of trajectory from female to male, light to dark – and in doing so he ascribes certain values to either side of these proposed oppositional paintings which are specific to his personal, and cultural, experiences; and these are therefore naturally quite different from mine. Jonathan’s journey along this scale travels from a sketching of innocence to what he describes as the ‘dark side of our pysche’. He is exploring morality, perhaps, from a source in ‘morally strong’ to an end in ‘morally wrong’. Both ends of the scale represent ideas of power, and of control.

The impact of sequence upon narrative and the relationship of each object to the next is paramount for him; as is their objecthood; as in maintaining that space for wriggle-room for you and me, for our interpretation within the myraid cultural meanings that sit and shift over the work.” Shonagh Manson, Jerwood

Condition: Very Good. Spanning the peak of the global HIV/AIDS crisis, the book documents the poster’s vital resurgence as an affordable, locally adaptable medium for urgent public-health messaging in regions with limited electronic media. Through stark warnings, cultural metaphors, and iconic images—from the American “I Have AIDS, Please Hug Me” to Chaz Maviyane-Davies’ branded red-ribbon works in Zimbabwe—these designs educated on prevention, fought stigma, and humanized the epidemic. Accompanying the 2010–2012 traveling exhibition, this full-color volume remains an essential testament to graphic design’s role in confronting one of history’s deadliest pandemics.

Condition: Very Good. Calling it a ‘visual autobiography’, Neurath documents the importance to him of visual material, from his earliest years to his professional activity with the picture language of Isotype. He draws clear connections between the stimulus he received as a boy – from illustrated books, toys, and exhibitions – to the considered work in visual education that occupied him for the last twenty years of his life. This engaging and informal account gives a rich picture of Central-European culture around the turn of the twentieth century, as well as an exposition of the techniques of Isotype. New Alphabet provoked reaction, and this is also recorded in the 'Kwadraatbladen' series. Anthon Beeke countered with his naked women alphabet, to what he saw as the sterility of reductionist modernism and lack of emotional content. Gerard Unger thought it more logical to adapt the machines rather than developing an alphabet with new forms. Timothy Epps took Crouwel's premise further by designing an alphabet that was more familiar, yet at the same time readable by machines. In the introduction to his 'Kwadraatblad' Crouwel wrote, that his unconventional alphabet was intended as an initial step in that direction and could be followed by further research. Book includes interviews with Non-Format, TwoPoints.Net and Erik Brandt.' Octavo Redux 1:1 gives students and those who have never seen the magazine the chance to view the whole series, along with a lot of background information and initial handmade design studies. It was never the intention that copies of Octavo would become collectors' items or be hard to find: the modest 16 pages plus cover and three-colour (+varnish) print specifications of the first issue attest to this.
