(Preface) 'In 1968, DRU (Design Research Unit) reached its silver jubilee, and we were commissioned by the publishers to write a book to commemorate the event. Our assignment, however, was not to produce a conventional history of one particular organization, but to use the jubilee occasion to survey in broader terms the course of design progress since the war. Within this context, we have used DRU as an example to show how the major trends and changes have affected the practice of design for industry and, in turn, how design practice has itself influenced the course of events. This is why, although the work of other designers is referred to in the text, all the illustrations are of DRU's designers and their work.'
