The Ulm school was a novelty from the start. Not only are their objectives clearer, more real, more radical, more comprehensive than those of all institutes that train designers for the design of machine series products, components and graphics in the service of advertising. Also unique is the lack of illusion with which the task in Ulm recognized and tried to solve the interdependence with the realities of our rational-technical world.” Hans Eckstein

Good condition: rubbing to covers, light bumps to corners, age toning to pages, pencil inscription to inside back cover, sign of slight break to binding at bottom 1" of first end page. Please contact us should you have any further questions about condition.

#0001

Details: Luzern - Genossenschaft Photoausstellung. 1952. Foreword: "Looking at a series of photographs taken from a space rocket, and at the same time at pictures from the very beginning of photography one realises how great the developments of photography and technics within a generation have been. Not many of our contemporaries are conscious of the fact that photography, parallel to printing, has become one of the most important means of communication, and thereby an absolutely necessary element of cultural, social and political life. At the same time the camera, more accurate and impartial than the human eye, has become indispensable to science, the world of sports, to the reconstruction of accidents, the analysis of movements and re-production of forms and structures.”

Good condition: rubbing to covers, light bumps to corners, age toning to pages, pencil inscription to inside front cover. Please contact us should you have any further questions about condition.

#0002/18

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0496/2979/0360/products/0002-Lucerne-1_c630339f-0c7c-4749-b7b2-d2c4945f1017.jpg?v=1603384843
begegnung-mit-der-form
Begegnung mit der Form - Joseph Müller-Brockmann

Details: Guggenbühl, Paul. Beautifully designed with many colourful ‘isotypes’; the picture language developed by Neurath and artist Gerd Arntz to display statistics in a simplified manner. Arntz would later join the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics. Otto Neurath (Vienna, December 10, 1882 - Oxford, December 22, 1945) developed a scientific method that made data information more attractive and easier to understand: ISOTYPE (International System Of TYpographic Picture Education). Numbers and words in statistics are clarified in this method by means of pictures: 10,000 cars are indicated in the statistics by 1 symbol for a car, and 50,000 cars by 5 times the same symbol. Neurath needed someone who could translate his words into clear, simple images. For this he found the German, socially engaged artist Gerd Arntz (1900-1988). He designed more than 4000 symbols for statistics and, together with Otto Neurath, optimised the ISOTYPE method for image statistics. They are all recognisable, powerful and often timeless symbols that are still used today.
