About: Very scarce copy of Format, issue 1. The Society of Typographic Designers of Canada was formed in 1958 by a small group of designers in Toronto. Its purpose was to further the development of typographical design in Canada. This first issue of Format sought to present the work and thinking of Canadian designers against the broad background of international typography.

(Foreword) "Another magazine dealing with typography and design. How can we justify it ? What makes it different? Why is it? First of all it is free. Secondly, it affords an intimate sounding pla.tform for designers, and friends. Thirdly, our contributors contribute in full: not only the what, but also the how of what they have to 'mise-en-page.' This Format is not so much a magazine, as a collection of personal letters in designers' own hand to other designers. The scope of the magazine will not be restricted to typography, but will stay within areas of interest to our members and kindred spirits. This first issue takes a Cook's tour of many of our design centres, and has us visit Italy (Grignani & Novarese) Belgium (Baudin) Germany (Zapf) England (Sir James Pitman) USA (Burns) Jamaica (Dair) and Canada (all the others, even Moritsugu).?
