(Preface) 'Hans Schmoller played an unprecedented role in post-war British typography. For over a quarter of a century he held the most important design job in the country as typographer and, later, production director at Penguin Books.
Hans died in September 1985. Had he lived he would have been 70 in April 1986 and we, friends, colleagues, book-lovers, would have celebrated the occasion appropriately with a 'festschrift' for a dear friend who contributed so much to our pleasure.
Monotype has kindly devoted this issue of the Recorder to the life and work of this great typographer. Hans's friends and colleagues have contributed personal recollections and appreciations of a man who at times amused us, at times bewildered us, but always left us in awe of his rare gifts and obsession with typographic perfection.'
