(Introduction) 'We need good design. It makes our surroundings more attractive to live in and raises Britain's reputation abroad. The Designers and Art Directors Association is dedicated to doing all it can to improve our standards of advertising and graphic design and we are encouraged by the results so far. Their yearly exhibition, now in its third year, is the highwater mark in the graphic designers' calendar.
The annual record, published for the first time last year, established itself as an international handbook to the best British work in graphic communication. For 1965 the scope of the Exhibition has been broadened to include categories for newspaper features, comprehensive design programmes and complete advertising campaigns.
The jury has been enlarged to bring in wider experience and they have based their judgements not merely on the excellence of appearance of any item under consideration, but its suitability for the job it is intended to do.
This book is the record of the award winning items and their 400 or so companions in the 1965 D&AD Exhibition. It is, therefore, a unique survey of the trends in Britain's advertising art and graphics during the past year.'
