(Preface) 'D&AD is a strange organisation. An unlikely marriage between pure design and the producers of advertising. The fact that D&AD is not simply an art directors' club gives it independence and authority. D&AD offers no selling or marketing concepts to industry, merely preaches the doctrine of crisp visual communication. And the fact that some twenty leading companies now sponsor no-strings-attached Awards through D&AD proves that D&AD's work of stimulating British design is at last being taken seriously. Each year the D&AD Exhibition, of which this book is a record, is seen by more and more people, travels further and further afield as an ambassador of British graphic talent.
This year the jury had the task of selecting work for the Exhibition from some 6,000 individual print and film entries from all over the United Kingdom. It was a hard jury; standards were necessarily high. And, as before, there were categories where it was felt that no award was merited...'
