Type production had become more mechanized during the century, but had always been in the hands of foundrymen. In 1886, Ottmar Mergenthaler put typefounding within reach of every newspaper composing room when his linotype machine went into use at the New York Tribune. Using a keyboard, the operator set type one line at a time, negating the need to mold and set type one letter at a time, as had been done since Gutenberg invented movable type. As a result, the foundries where type was made for big-city newspapers and small print shops were thrown into chaos.
