With thanks to Kiyonori Muroga.'

(Introduction) 'Over the past ten years, we have become increasingly involved in projects with a three-dimensional aspect. It was never planned, but the completion of one exhibition design project has been followed seamlessly by the next.

We often wonder if we have found this niche because there are few graphic designers that have an aptitude for 3-D graphics or if others just steer well clear. It has certainly been difficult to make money out of many of these projects: they can be very time-consuming. Apart from the often long journey learning about an unknown process, there are wider considerations of public safety, humidity and vandalism: these time-consuming issues and potential pitfalls seem to treble when working in the third dimension.

But we still go there. Sometimes because we like working with a particular group of people. Sometimes because the subject matter is particularly inspirational. But more often than not because of the creative potential offered by a project with a broad range of possible physical solutions to explore new materials and technologies - by contrast to the relatively few variables of print design (paper, size, ink and print type) where the difference between the mundane and the inspirational is often very slight.

Finally, context is everything - materials and processes sit in our sample library, waiting to be paired with the appropriate job. The specific characteristics and baggage of these processes that makes them so right for one job, means there are rarely revisited.'

Condition: Very Good.
