(Foreword) This exhibition is the result of a visit to London by Mrs. Walter A. Haas, Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Art. While in London this summer, she devoted considerable time and effort to ensure that an exhibition of British Art would be a major feature of San Francisco's London Week. With the encouragement of the Minister of the American Embassy, Mr. G. Lewis Jones, and Mr. George D. Culler, Director of the San Francisco Museum of Art, I have tried to select the most representative and interesting British works available. The exhibition reflects what is in the forefront today. Some artists have been omitted because their work was not available. The wide variety of styles, which is characteristic of British contemporary art, has been its strength as well as its weakness, but its most noteworthy feature is its distinct individuality. The exhibit reflects primarily non-figurative art which is one of the dominant post-war tendencies of the British art scene.
