(Preface) 'The representation of the United States of America at the 1964 Venice Biennale consists of two exhibitions: the first, Four Germinal Painters, includes the work of Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns; the second, Four Younger Artists, includes John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, and Frank Stella. Louis and Noland are being shown in the American Pavilion at the Biennale grounds, while Rauschenberg, Johns, and the second exhibition appear at the former American Consulate, on the Grand Canal, as an official annex of the Biennale.
These two exhibitions have been selected to illustrate the advanced currents in contemporary American art: the first to demonstrate major sources of the two present significant directions, a new kind of abstract painting, and a new involvement in the use of objects; the second to demonstrate the efflorescence of these ideas among a younger group, which at the same time has made distinctive original contributions.'
