(Preface) 'Armin Hofmann was born in Winterthur in 1920 and grew up during the great era of Swiss graphic design when he came under the influence of Alfred Willimann, Ernst Keller and Hans Finsler. He began his career as a teacher at the Basel School of Arts and Crafts at the early age of 26 years and continued there for 40 years.

The teaching method he used was flexible and set new standards. His ideas became widely known through his work as a teacher in such places as Ahmedabad, Philadelphia, New Haven or Brissago and through his books, in which he set down his maxims. In Hofmann these gifts as a teacher are united with independent and strikingly rich powers of artistic expression. It is this rare combination of talents that gives him his charisma and broad authority in Europe and abroad. If «Swiss Graphic Design» still commands respect as a concept synonymous with quality, the credit goes to him rather than anyone else.

Armin Hofmann's work is enormously varied. It includes posters, stage designs, logos, typographic work, orientation systems and also three-dimensional designs, mostly for public buildings.

This book will be an incentive to rising generations to return again and again to the central issues of graphic design.'
