(Introduction) 'The exhibition '1928: Beauty and Lucidity, Logic and Ingenuity' marks the close of Wim Crouwel's career as director of Boymans-van Beuningen Museum. In his function as director he always preferred to act as one of a team. He was not out to stamp his own ideas onto the artistic management and this was the very reason why we found it interesting to ask him if he would like to define his specific views on art and design.

Trained as a graphic designer and passionately interested in design and architecture in general, he seemed to me the ideal person to make a specific selection from design of the past hundred years. This led on to the idea of making an exhibition centring round the year 1928 — his year of birth, but also the year in which functionalism, he said, reached its high point.'

'This catalogue offers a wide-lens image of the year 1928. It is seen from a general historical point of view, and also through the eyes of one man, Hannes Meyer who in 1928 was director of the Bauhaus. It shows us not only the year 1928 as viewed by contemporaries, but also as seen in the 1990s. It ranges from discussions on architecture to tubular-steel furniture to typography. It is complemented by extensive photographic documentation and articles discussing the terminology and concepts then in use.'
