Presidents Introduction

'Our new logo. It's no joke. Unless we designers have a change of heart, our appearance in the book may soon become a distant memory. Why? Frustration is beginning to show. Over the past three years design entries have been shrinking at an alarming rate, while advertising entries have been expanding. Their juries have become more generous and embracing. We, on the other hand, seem to relish doing the opposite. Closing our mind to work that doesn't reflect our own. It's sad. And it's serious. And it's got to change. This year I have done everything in my power to help make the passage into the annual smoother by reorganising the design juries and widening the categories to give greater concentration on the work and more variety. 1998 will be your best ever opportunity to get into 'The Book', and maybe even pick up that elusive pencil. And if you happen to be one of next year's judges, try something for me. Look in the mirror and say 'IN'. See? It doesn't hurt.' Mike Dempsey
