Catalog of an exhibition held 8/4 - 27/5/90 at the Museum Boymans-Van Beuningen.

(Foreword) 'This exhibition places Ben Akkerman in the limelight. The Boymans-van Beuningen Museum already owns a number of fine paintings and drawings by Akkerman, who has just celebrated his 70th birthday. In the course of fifty years Akkerman has carefully built up a small oeuvre as well as pursuing his daily occupation.

Although his artistic activity started as for back as the late nineteen-thirties, it was not until 1973, the year of his first one-man show at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, that his work came in for more attention. Since then, exhibitions have regularly featured his work. The Boymans-van Beuningen presentation consists of paintings and drawings, both techniques being autonomous means of expression for Akkerman.

The selected paintings date from 1965 on; the drawings represent his entire oeuvre, displaying the development from his first renderings of the landscape to pure abstraction. Subtle lines, grids and hatchings, placed with great sensitivity, invite intent contemplation.

The exhibition and catalogue are the result of an extremely close collaboration between the museum and the artist. I am most grateful to Ben Akkerman for his conscientious help in the creation of the exhibition. I also wish to express my gratitude to Hans Sizoo for his catalogue introduction, which focuses on the drawings. A final word of thanks to the lenders and to all those involved in the production of the exhibition and catalogue.' Wim Crouwel
