(Preface) 'In the beginning was not the word, but pictorial representations of objects and biological forms. Today the wheel has turned full circle, and imagery has overtaken the written word in the communication of messages and ideas through the mass media.
The Dictionary of Visual Language is the first attempt to codify a modern iconography. The work of illustrators and designers of any period reflects contemporary fine art attitudes and preoccupations; these are alluded to throughout the dictionary.
References are also made to historic signs and devices and influential work of the past where they are relevant to modern thinking, but the main theme of this dictionary is the current working language of graphic communication.
We all refer to a universal storehouse of knowledge as we transmit and decode verbal and visual signals in our daily life. This visual language has a syntax, vocabulary and rhetoric like any other; The Dictionary of Visual Language lists a basic vocabulary and shows empirically that a universal grammar emerges.
Indispensable to the student, professional painter and practising designer as a source reference book, it is also necessary (and fascinating) reading for the layman, as ultimately it is he who accepts and interprets the language in its various visual forms.
George Lois says in his foreword: 'The Dictionary of Visual Language comes to us at a time when art directors seem less and less aware of the world's rich, limitless lode of imagery, and of its awesome potential for communicating with spirit and style. It is to be hoped that this wonderful, needed volume will stir new interest in this enormous reservoir of creative tools'.
