(Introduction) 'The John Gorham project began only a few days after John died on the 7th September 2001. At his funeral one subject kept coming up. There should be a book. The message was insistent then, and even more so when friends met up for dinner in his honour a year later. So James Beveridge and I started work. Collecting material. And the more trips I made to Pauline's house to look through boxes and files and drawers, the more I realised the phenomenal richness of his output. Meanwhile the interviews started. That's when I understood the true nature of his impact. I remember going through my file of photocopies with Paul Arden, turning page after page, and Paul didn't say a word. It was a bit worrying, so I prompted him, what did he think? He said the work moved him. "To create this consistent perfection .. it's emotional to think about." So we had a maestro as our subject, and all the top guys in art and design as our contributors. How could we fail..?'
