(Foreword) ‘WITH THIS, the American Center for Design's Seventeenth 100 Show, I've now had the experience of seeing the competition through from start to finish. We began by inviting just the right chair, Rick Poynor, who in turn invited just the right jury: Stephen Doyle, Laurie Haycock Makela, and Rudy VanderLans. We sent out Rudy's wonderfully American poster calling for entries, watched the UPS delivery persons stagger into our office with heaped hand trucks and armloads of entries, saw all 1,700 submissions laid out for inspection, witnessed the first round of cuts, the second round of cuts, over which our earnest jury truly agonized, then listened as they explained the reasoning behind each one of their choices...'
