Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman (1882–1945) was a pioneering Dutch typographer, printer, and experimental artist, best known for his innovative use of letterpress printing to create abstract, collage-like compositions that blurred the lines between text, image, and poetry. From September 1923 to November 1926, Werkman self-published The Next Call (original Dutch title: De Erste Bladwijzer, later De Tweede Bladwijzer), a series of nine irregular pamphlets plus one manifesto. These were not traditional magazines but poetic manifestos and visual essays, produced in tiny editions (often 50–100 copies) using scavenged materials like woodblocks, metal type, and ink smudges.
This edition is the definitive facsimile reprint of The Next Call. Titled simply The Next Call, it faithfully reproduces the originals in full color, capturing the tactile irregularities of Werkman's "hot printing" technique - where heat and pressure warped inks into painterly effects.
