(Preface) 'If an exhibition could sum up London's youth culture, then 'New Spirit in Craft and Design' would suggest some of the many facets. It is not just that most of the makers in the show live, work or have trained here: more importantly what this exhibition looks at are ways of working and surviving in this city. A lot of the work comes from the streets - sometimes literally - of Dalston, Clerkenwell, Hackney, Walworth or Portobello.

Young furniture makers, jewellers and metalsmiths are showing incredible dexterity and imagination when recycling scavenged materials and obsolete artefacts of yesterday. There is youth's reaction against everything that is thought normal, tasteful, safe, middle-aged or middle-class. A lot of the work is also anti-art, craft and design. There are few dovetails and no compromises. Style and nostalgia, love of the primitive and theatre take preference over traditional values.

This is what the tourists come to see and the Japanese to buy - the hard edge of the crafts. Highly fashion conscious and fast moving - a distant relative to its larger family of British makers.

There is also a quieter, less dramatic response to the City's environment by designers and makers who are thought of as minimalists in comparison to their more flamboyant contemporaries. With their refined, more subtle approach, they share in the innovative force behind this exhibition.'
