(Preface) 'Printed ephemera is a term for anything printed for a short-term purpose, such as a bus ticket, a police summons, a Christmas card, a radio licence, a tax demand, a circus poster, a pin packet, a soapflake box, a beermat or an airline ticket.

This is a book about collecting such trivia and some of the uses to which they can be put, whether the aims are as serious as those of a social historian, a teacher or a student working on a thesis, or as frivolous and decorative as those of a teenager, who pastes pop posters and record sleeves over his bedroom walls. In either case their material is a reflection of living history.'
