(Preface) 'THIS CLASSIC of typographical history has been long unobtainable, and this new revised and enlarged edition is now made available. It is obvious that some knowledge of the history of the evolution of type design is essential to a complete understanding of typography as practised today. The story is briefly but completely told, taking the reader from the Carolingian script, and the evolution of national styles in calligraphy, through the first known designed type faces sponsored by Jenson and Aldus; with chapters on Garamond, Granjon from France, van Dyck and the Dutch letter, the birth of the 'modern' face, Grandjean, Fournier and Fleischman.

The emphasis moves from the Continent to this country with comment on Caslon, Baskerville and Bell, and, once again, the general influence of calligraphy: Didot and Bodoni take their place with some discussion of the effect of the Industrial Revolution. Then follow the 'Black' letter and its new forms, the several revivals, William Morris and the Private Press Movement, freer forms of lettering, concluding with remarks on American, French and German type designs. The whole story is fully illustrated with upwards of fifty reproductions.'
