This publication accompanies the exhibition 'From Hard Werken to Inízio' in Karmeliterkloster, Frankfurt am Main, from August 26 until September 24, 1995 and in the Kunsthal, Rotterdam, from October 14 until November 26, 1995.

(Preface) 'This is the first publication to present an overview of Hard Werken's history. It is published on the occasion of the special Hard Werken exhibitions in the Karmeliterkloster in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and the Kunsthal Rotterdam. We are very grateful to Paul Hefting and Dirk van Ginkel for their personal contributions and the many interviews they had with Joep Bergmans, Henk Elenga, Gerard Hadders, Tom van den Haspel, Bart Jan Jansen, Willem Kars, Hendrik Ten Cate en Rick Vermeulen. This publication was made possible by the generous support of the Mondrian Foundation Amsterdam, Neroc Amsterdam, Grafinoord Amsterdam, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch Design Institute. We owe special thanks to Professor Friedrich Friedl, who has backed the project from the start. Finally, I would like to thank the exhibition's initiator, Wim Pijbes, who organised the exhibition and supervised the enthusiastic collaboration between the two institutes involved.'
