(Preface) 'This book is the companion volume to the exhibition held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in November 1986. Since it was founded in 1936 by the Royal Society of Arts the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry (RDI) has included the very best professional practitioners of design in Britain over a wide spectrum of activity. Just 136 British designers have been elected to the Faculty since its inception. Their range of disciplines extends from the very small-scale (e.g. lettering, enamelling, stamps) to the very large-scale (e.g. bridges and townscapes).
The coincidence of the RDIs' fiftieth birthday celebration with Industry Year 1986 provides a unique opportunity to take a thoughtful look at some of the outstanding achievements of British designers.
Exhibition and book draw on a wonderfully varied collection of artifacts produced over the past half-century, and indeed on an extraordinary cast of characters - from Eric Gill and Gordon Craig to Uffa Fox and Sir Barnes Wallis. The book includes concise biographies of the RDIs and a selection of 100 revealing illustrations of their work.'
