(Preface) 'The poster has been instrumental in spreading the ideas and images that have characterised each period of modern history. It has reflected social and cultural upheavals and in its most experimental periods has led the way to new forms and motifs.

This publication contains a vivid and memorable account of the poster. The 20th-Century Poster's distinguished authors recall the wide and frequently contradictory range of causes that the poster has served: political, ideological, artistic and commercial. Drawn from such diverse sources as Art Nouveau, Secession, Dada, Constructivism, Bauhaus, Futurism, and De Stijl, the two hundred richly illustrated posters presented in this book, and in the accompanying Walker Art Center exhibition, illuminate the ways in which the modern poster has brought the most daring elements of the avant-garde into the cultural mainstream.

This century witnessed the establishment of graphic design as a profession, and the authors give an account of those artists who struggled for artistic recognition while devoting themselves almost exclusively to the creation and design of posters.

Masterpieces by the outstanding designers A. M. Cassandre, Herbert Bayer, E. McKnight Kauffer, the Stenberg brothers, Piet Zwart, Herbert Matter and nearly ninety other designers have been meticulously reproduced in this handsome volume. The evolution of graphic design in this century is traced up to the present day through the emergence of a new generation of highly gifted designers. The strength of the new poster art may be readily seen in the work of such multifaceted designers as April Greiman in America, Wolfgang Weingart in Switzerland, and Tandanori Yokoo in Japan.'
