(Preface) 'This catalogue continues a series of monographs which situate typography and graphic design in a broader context. In Spring, 1988 the Lubalin Center held the exhibition Period Styles: A History of Punctuation, which examined an overlap between typography and literature, linguistics, and grammar. The idea for a project on numbers was inspired in part by the success of this show.

The visualization of numbers belongs to the origins of writing itself, and is thus the most ancient form of "graphic design." Numbers today permeate everyday life, and they constitute the basic language of science and technology. Numbers appear throughout the disciplines represented by The Cooper Union's schools of Art, Architecture, and Engineering, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; numbers thus offered us an ideal starting point for a school-wide collaboration.'
