(Preface) 'Conceived during the economic and social turmoil between the two World Wars, influenced by Modern art, and inspired by the machine age, "Streamline" -American art deco design—rep-resented a quintessential American aesthetic.

"Distinguished by the beauty that is peculiarly a product of artist and machine working together," Streamline design exploded into popularity in the 1920s with the use of bold, abstract motifs throughout the commercial arts. As advertising agencies began to stress image and allure over mere form and utility, ads and product packaging took on a sleek, seductive look that celebrated the increasingly mechanised tempo of daily life.

A decade later, a new breed of artist, the industrial designer, began to fulfil the promise of Streamline advertising. With the application of aerodynamic and other engineering principles, Streamline design updated the appearance of a wide range of products while significantly improving their efficiency. Although enthusiasm for Streamline's modernist style waned following the 1939 New York World's Fair, its current revival in popular culture attests to the remarkable appeal and endurance of this distinctively American style.'
