(Introduction/Translation) 'This booklet is the 8th edition (published in 1977) of the annual review "Nederlandse Postzegels" (Dutch Stamps), a joint publication of the Staatsbedrift der PTT (the Dutch Postal Service) and the Staatsuitgeverij (State Publishers) in The Hague. The text was compiled by the Dienst voor Esthetische Vormgeving (PTT) (Aesthetic Design Department of the PTT).
As an introduction to this publication, three contributions are written by the designers who received a multiple commission to design new ciffer stamps in 1974. They were Willem Sandberg, Gerrit Noordzij, and Wim Crouwel. Even then, they had made a mutual agreement that if a publication about these stamps were to be published, it would be done in consultation, with not only the chosen designer but also the two competing designers being given a chance to speak. The order was more or less self-evident: an informal narrative by Sandberg explaining how he arrived at his designs; A philosophical reflection by Noordzij, with illustrations and a detailed explanation of the role of numbers in our writing system, reproduced in facsimile, and finally, a practical exposition by Crouwel on the ideas that inspired his design, which was ultimately selected. This three-part introduction fills a gap in the 1976 Stamp Yearbook: it didn't mention the number stamps, even though they had already been partially issued.'
