(Preface) 'The members of the Jury appointed by the Ministry of the Interior for the period from 1976 to 1979 to select the "Most Beautiful Swiss Books of the Year" convened in Sion on the 9th, 10th and 11th of February 1977. The meeting was held exceptionally early this year in order to make the award-winning books available for exhibition at the Leipzig Book Fair. Through their assistance and hospitality, the Canton of Valais and especially the City of Sion expressed their genuine interest in our traditional presentation of awards for the most beautiful Swiss books of the year. Anybody who had assumed that participation in this year's contest would be somewhat smaller owing to the economic situation was surely surprised by the unusually large number and remarkably high quality of the entries...'
