Linotype-Paul is a division of the larger Monotype company. The studio was known for designing typefaces for the Linotype typesetting machines and later for photocomposition, with some of its most famous designs including Futura, Palatino, and Optima.
(Introduction) 'At the time when Ottmar Mergenthaler's concept of mechanical typesetting achieved world-wide recognition, the buyers of the first generation of typesetting machines had no more than a dozen alphabets to choose from. In 1982, however, Linotype is offering a typeface programme which includes well over 1.000 roman alphabets, as well as a large number of non-roman alphabets. The programme's origins can be traced back to the world established »hot metal« resources of Mergenthaler, Linotype, Stempel and Haas. Amongst these are famous typefaces created for us by some of the world's leading typeface designers, such as Adrian Frutiger and Hermann Zapf. As well as these we have at our disposal a great number of typefaces licensed from other manufacturers and typeface designers...'
