Mediamatic Magazine – Exquisite 20th century media and art publication. Mediamatic was founded in 1983 as a meeting place for media, television and video artists, intellectuals and scientists. After a while the first Mediamatic Magazine was published; a magazine about media, art and television that was published internationally. It acquired a legendary status among those interested in the discussion around new media. From 1994 and onwards every issue was accompanied CD-ROM/DVD-ROM art.
This "Ear Issue" (also called the OOR = EAR or (H)oor mijn Oor issue) shifts focus from visual culture to auditory perception, sound, radio, and the ear as a sensory and cultural organ. It explores free radio techniques, sound mixing, the "panoramic ear," and the transitory phase of human hearing in media environments, featuring theoretical and artistic contributions on audio culture, noise, and listening in the early 1990s.
Main Features / Articles:
- In Memoriam the Ear — Editorial / Introduction (reflecting on the ear's cultural status)
- The Theory of Mixing — Geert Lovink (survey of free radio and ether techniques in Amsterdam)
- The Panoramic Ear (discussion of auditory range versus visual limits)
- Additional texts on sound theory, radio, mixing, and auditory perception, including references to influences like William Burroughs, John Cage, and others.
- Contributions exploring the shift from eye-dominant to ear-aware media experiences.
