(Preface) Special issue - The 75th anniversary of the invention of the Lino- type is being celebrated this year and we have decided to make this edition of the L&M News an anniversary number. Four extra pages have been inserted to form a supplement tracing the steps which led to the first production models of the 'Blower' machine. These were installed in the offices of the New York Tribune on 3rd July, 1886. The issue of the paper for that date is reproduced on our cover. By 1890 several machines had found their way to papers in England, the Leeds Mercury (now incorporated in the Yorkshire Post) being first in the field. Machines manufactured in England were working for the Newcastle Chronicle in August 1892 (not 1891 as we stated in a recent issue); these had a square base, the first claw base machines going to the Wakefield Chronicle in 1895.
