(Preface) 'In one major sense, any design must remain as fluid as possible, for it is meant as a stimulus to the imagination of its audience. This is the belief of Jean-Michel Folon, who was born in Brussels in 1934 and is well known for his achievements in book, magazine, and poster design, and in animated films.

Folon is one of the four internationally known designers whose work forms the subject of this book. Each has his own viewpoint, and each viewpoint bears the unmistakable imprint of the designer of genius.

For Jan Lenica, the word 'designer' is not all-embracing enough to describe his profession; he certainly designs posters, but he is also concerned with, for example, conceiving and making animated films. Lenica, born in Poland in 1928, has received many awards in these fields and has exhibited his work throughout the world.

Josef Müller-Brockmann sees exciting possibilities for the future of graphic design, which can break across national boundaries and act as an international means of communication. He was born in Switzerland in 1914 and has held exhibitions of his work in his home country, in Germany, Japan, and the United States.

Dick Elffers, born in Rotterdam in 1920, has made his name both as a painter and a graphic designer. He emphasizes that any design will involve aesthetic norms, but must be adapted to particular problems.

Each designer has supplied a short statement of his aims and biography: further comment is left to the work itself, set out in a long series of plates, many in colour.'
