The eight issues of Octavo, journal of typography, have acquired cult status. Published between 1986 and 1992, Octavo was an independent self-financed journal limited to a production run of just 3000 units for each of the 8 issues (with the first 7 being print based and the last as a CD Rom).

"The editors took a modernist stance - each issue was at the cutting edge of what was possible with typesetting, reprographics and print, produced at a time when the industry was transitioning from analogue to digital. The first 6 issues and aspects of the 7th issue were analogue based. Each of the printed issues was 16pp A4 format with 4pp cover and 8pp semi-transparent jacket. The typeface used throughout was Scangraphic Unica." Mark Holt, Editor

(Issue 1 Editorial) "Octavo has evolved from a desire to see an independent publication which acts as a serious forum for the discussion of matters, both contemporary and historical, relating to typographic design. In its eight issues the journal will focus primarily on typography within graphic design, but will also investigate the way in which letterforms are used in the visual arts, poetry, architecture and the environment, as well as looking at broader matters such as design education."

88.6 features: Signs of Revolution (Martin Pawley), Printed Time (Barry Kitts) and Highway Codes (Neil Parker). This issue was the first to be printed using a four-color process.
