(Preface) 'Just over a century ago, in 1886, Ottmar Mergenthaler completed development of the Blower Linotype machine which was successfully installed at the New York Tribune. This effectively brought to an end an era of four hundred years during which type had been set by hand.
This Concise Chronology, which celebrates the century of the Linotype machine, is a year-by-year account of development in typesetting from 1886 to the present day. This century has seen not only momentous changes in the techniques of typesetting, but also an amazing quickening in the speed of change. At the turn of the century Linotype and Monotype equipment was becoming established, closely followed by the Intertype and Ludlow systems. However, by the 1960s phototypesetting equipment was beginning to dislodge hot-metal machines which had managed to survive barely a quarter of the length of time during which type was set by hand.'
