(Introduction) 'A major creative force in the first half of the 20th Century, typography in France, producing types such as the Grasset, Peignot and Bifur, attracted famous typographers such as Adrian Frutiger and Eric Gill and was soon to earn an international reputation.
Two trends existed side by side: 'modern' letter-based work, in which the text-conveying capacity of the letter prevailed, and picture-based work, such as that of poster artist Cassandre, which was less closely linked to the history of print.
In the post-war period, legibility was the main priority on the editorial scene with type giving way to text; at the same time, the invasion of pictures was marginalising typographic research. One of the key exceptions was the work of Marcel Jacno whose achievements included the Chaillot types for the TNP theatre.
In the mid eighties, a generation of young graphic artists rediscovered typography as a means of creative expression, using it to back up pictures or even supplant them. Their influences ranged from Neville Brody and English 'punk' styles to the first computer experiments coming out of the United States. More recently, Holland has been the scene of new creative developments. However, to date, only very few French graphic artists can make a claim to a recognisable personal image.
The exhibition provides an opportunity to highlight the vitality and creativity of the Dutch graphic artists whose work is a lesson in successfully combining artistic creation and functionality. It has also prompted new original works on texts chosen by participants.
The exhibition is being held at the Maison du Livre de l'Image et du Son as part of Villeurbanne's policy of giving the public wider access to cultural media. The very name chosen - Design at the Maison du Livre de l'Image et du Son'- testifies to the importance placed on graphic design, primarily through typography in books and pictures.'
