(Preface) 'Edward Fella spent 30 years working as a commercial artist in Detroit before returning to graduate school at the age of 48 and becoming a pioneer in implementing deconstructivist theories in design. He is currently Professor of Graphic Design at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).

In an age when much graphic design displays its process or its influences, Fella stands out as a remarkable individualist. His lettering and photography has the power and spontaneity of raw art, yet it is born from a great knowledge of the theory and technique of typography and graphics.

This first ever book on Fella is in itself a new Fella work, created with the assistance of Lewis Blackwell, Lucy Bates and Lorraine Wild. At the heart of the book are photographs, most of them previously unpublished, which Fella has taken over the years as a record of vernacular lettering. These have been combined and juxtaposed with the finest examples of his unique hand lettering, to give an insight into the idiosyncratic world of Edward Fella. The result is a book which will appeal to all designers and art directors, whether their love is photography or fonts, art direction or art.'
