(Foreword) 'This issue is devoted to signs and lettering in the street: signs which guide, inform, amuse, stimulate, or confuse the pedestrian, the cyclist, and the motorist and contribute to the convenience, the hazards, and the texture of our cities. The 208 photographs of road signs, shop signs, and notices - good or bad, accidental or incidental, emphatic or obscure, well-designed or ill-conceived - on the following 71 pages were all specially taken for Typographica (in London and Rotterdam, and at Epping).

The photographs on pages 4-13 of traffic signs along the road from Marble Arch to London Airport graphically underline the urgent need to review the whole system of British road signs and especially to adopt simple, pictorial symbols in place of the wordy and often ambiguous notices at present in use.

Robert Brownjohn's photographs reveal the pleasures, for people who are letter- conscious, of primitive street "typography' and the accidents of juxtaposition pleasures which, as Nicolete Gray discovered at Epping, are so easily destroyed (though not necessarily, if local traditions are respected) by concentrated attempts to erase ugliness from the streetscape.'
