(Introduction) 'This book is specifically intended for graphic design students, as well as for beginners in the graphic design profession. While its major emphasis is on the equipment, materials, techniques, and procedures of the graphic design studio, it also describes those aspects of the graphic arts industry that the designer must be familiar with in order to prepare art and copy for reproduction In writing this book, I tried to avoid taking anything for granted on the part of the reader. In my many years as a graphic design teacher, I have observed that too many authors and teachers fail to adequately cover the craft aspects of the profession. Either they assume that the student has already acquired this experience, or they believe that it is too insignificant, in comparison to creative aspects, to be worthy of discussion. Consequently, while the student is desperately trying to figure out, on his own, how to rule a line without smearing it, the teacher or author is airily probing the outer reaches of creativity.'
