(Introduction) 'Ask SEA what they're about and you get what they're not. Not clever-clever. Yes, their work has brevity, simplicity and clarity but I don't buy this anti-academia sham. Design is no pageant, mister Eric Morley. There's more to it than that. If we opened their skulls, we'd see engineering plants doing overtime. Rivets of space, swabs of molten colour and unionist strikes over aesthetics gang up to produce the most lovely of creations. So how does this happen?
Here's my hunch. They think with their gut, as children instinctively do. It's an endearing way to work and has swept Crouwel, Rankin, Williamson, Oliver and infinite other forces of nature along in their poetic wake. Ten years in, this book is a free-range download of many of those wonderful, potent and occasionally painful associations. Commercially, culturally and socially, they've enriched the bloodline of British graphic design with a good honest dose of northern iron. Though the work is delicate and sings, in key, to its own elegant tune. At times, it flows like damn fine wine. At others, it's a pint of Rennie spiked with MDMA.
Either way, it tastes grand. Gulp it down.' Peter Kirby
