Issue #8, entitled FREE and published in 2002, arrived as an unexpected revival nearly a decade after the original tabloid series had wound down in 1994. By this point, Murray and Sorrell had evolved from student provocateurs to established publishers, with Peter Miles having departed in 2004 to pursue fashion and art direction. FREE functioned as a reflective anthology and swansong, compiling archival fragments from earlier issues—distorted typography from Girl, post-Soviet collages from USSR, rave detritus from Cash—interwoven with new, more mature experiments in digital layering and metallic foils. Printed in a compact perfect-bound format with silver + black inks on textured stock, it eschewed the chaotic newsprint of its predecessors for a polished yet subversive elegance. Distributed freely at design events and book launches to mark the transition to FUEL's book-publishing era, FREE is hailed as the bridge between the magazine's punk origins and the studio's later culturally incisive tomes, like the Russian Criminal Tattoo series.
