(Preface) 'From its nineteenth century beginnings to I sophisticated late 20th-century developments, the poster has not only remained a powerful communication tool, but has reflected and shaped society too. Divided into three key sections, The Power of the Poster looks at the propaganda poster; the poster in the context of commercial advertising; and posters promoting performance, entertainment and exhibitions. Leading experts in the fields of design, art history, theatre history and from the world of advertising bring a fresh, innovative approach to understanding the impact and significance of the poster in all its many guises.
Looking at the special qualities that have enabled the poster to flourish as an active force up to the present day, the book discusses graphic vocabulary, design, methods of production, display and usage, and provides a fascinating exploration of images that have become part of the cultural landscape.
The 250 illustrations offer some of the best examples of poster art from the 19th and 20th centuries: the fin-de-siècle masterpieces of Toulouse-Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha; the dynamic work of artists such as McKnight Kauffer, Cassandre and Ludwig Hohlwein; psychedelic posters of the 1960s; famous Shell and London Transport images; brand advertising from the humorous Guinness characters of the 1930s; and controversial campaigns of today. Propaganda posters include historic images of war, remarkable images from the overthrow of Communism in Eastern Europe, and publicity for social issues including women's suffrage, the environment and AIDS.
Virtually all the posters are drawn from the wide-ranging collection at the V&A, one of the first museums to recognise the importance of the poster and to collect on an international basis. Capturing the essence of their time, many of these posters speak out again in this colourful and informative book.'
