Original hand 'mechanical' artwork on board for Ford graphic device, in addition to a set of reduced size 'photostats'.

In the pre-digital era (1960s–1980s), designers created a mechanical (paste-up board or camera-ready art) as the master for print reproduction. From a hand-drawn dummy, they pasted typeset text (bromides), headlines, rules, and line art onto heavy board using wax or rubber cement, an X-Acto knife, and T-square for precision. Photo areas were marked with red Rubylith overlays or windows, and registration marks ensured alignment.

Photostats (or stats/PMTs) were high-contrast photographic prints made from the mechanical or its parts on glossy paper, allowing same-size, enlarged, or reduced copies for scaling, proofing, client approvals, or revisions. The finished mechanical was then photographed to create line negatives for offset printing plates.
