(Introduction) 'The British Railways Board has made clear the importance it attaches to high quality design in the future growth of its business. The Board's Design Policy states that Design is fundamental to British Rail remaining an efficient enterprise. It has also given design a major role in its marketing strategy. The Board has emphasised the need to have a central resource through which all architecture and design projects must be routed, and which is dedicated to establishing, monitoring and improving standards throughout the railway system. The Department of Architecture and Design is this central resource.'
