The Board's Design Policy states that Design is fundamental to British Rail remaining an efficient enterprise. It has also given design a major role in its marketing strategy. The Board has emphasised the need to have a central resource through which all architecture and design projects must be routed, and which is dedicated to establishing, monitoring and improving standards throughout the railway system. The Department of Architecture and Design is this central resource.'
