(Introduction) 'De Stijl was an avant-garde art magazine founded in 1917 by Theo Van Doesburg, which he edited until his death in 1931. Its title, dutch for "The style," became the watchword for a movement of likeminded artists who championed not merely a new style of art but a new style of life based on universal harmony. The goal of De Stijl's leading form givers was to integrate art into all expressions of human activity. De Stijl embraced abstraction as the most viable means of translating twentieth-century science and technology into art. De Stijl vehemently rejected decoration in favour of spartan purity and sobriety. Through Van Doesburg's critical writings De Stijl spread internationally, influencing painting, architecture, furniture, and graphic design. As fine art it was in the vanguard of pure abstraction; as an applied art it inspired a distinctly new dutch typography...'
